Sweeney Todd - Going Out Theatre - Posted By 4action (4action) on 12th Jan 09 at 2:16am
NIGHT OUT EVENT IN HASLEMERE IN MARCH
Haslemere Hall
Sweeney Todd has been described as melodrama; as comic horror; as revenge tragedy. None of these descriptions really do the show justice. It is theatre of epic proportions; about fate, love, loyalty, cruelty and revenge. The protagonist is Shakespearian in his single-minded, psychotic desire for revenge. is partner in crime falls somewhere between clown and Lady Macbeth. The plot is simple: a man unjustly imprisoned returns, seeking revenge. Aided by an infatuated pie shop owner who is eager to find a new source of pie filling; triggered by a mind unhinged; and prompted by a missed opportunity to avenge his family, he embarks on a murderous spree. It is brutal, bloody and above all funny; hilariously funny. Sondheim’s varied and complex musical score, which is largely motific and through composed, moves seamlessly between intoxicating love songs, romping comic numbers and booming declamatory choruses.
