Chobham Common Walks - Posted By alexwalks (alexwalks) on 6th Oct 10 at 5:03pm
Chobham Common is a Surrey Wildlife Trust Reserve, details of which can be found at the SWT website click here for Chobham Common page. During the few walks I have taken around this area I found the actual common to be fairly un-inspiring walking, being fairly flat, and so wasn't expecting much entering the Common from the Chobham Road just off the A30. However was pleasantly surprised when entered a lightly wooded area leading to undulating heathland bursting with a variety of heather, flowers and Silver Birch. After a short time you can take a detour up to a Memorial Cross, which provides a few views. The Cross was erected in 1901 after the death of Queen Victoria who reviewed 8,129 of her troops on the Common in 1853.
Contining along walk, a second small detour offers itself to climb up to Oystershell Hill which gives fine views.
Crossing the M3 under a subway and following the main path a short distance you descend into the main bowl of Common. Cross the Common and exist through Coniferous Woodland via Stanners Hill untill crossing Chertsey Road and skirting round Fairoaks Airport untill meeting Mill Bourne River.
Although not really a river, the Mill Bourne still offers very pleasant and picturesque walking. The riverside footpath takes you west into Chobham Village were you turn North back into the western edge of the Common and after crossing the M3 again over a footbridge you enter Sunningdale Golf Club. This should have been a pretty easy route back to Sunningdale Station, but due to the amount of paths on the course I got lost! and ended up back on the Chobham Road after hacking my way through light woodland.
A Google Map of the walk can be found here...
And any tips on navigating through Golf Course's would be welcome!!
