Should Surrey Council allow oil drilling? (24th Aug 09 at 8:11pm UTC)
Local families and the National Trust have objected to plans to drill for oil in woods in Surrey.

Europa Oil and Gas Ltd are keen to drill in the Bury Hill area because they are taxed less for smaller drilling sites. This makes the small woodland close to Dorking a prime location. However, the National Trust is rebutting Europa Oil and Gas' attempts by claiming that to drill in Bury Hill Wood would have an "adverse environmental impact" because they would be drilling on green belt land. The National Trust also believe that there is no "national need" for the proposal and that it was against government policy.

Europa previously said that an environmental impact assessment at the site had been "very good".

Europa has submitted a planning application to Surrey County Council to conduct exploratory drilling for oil in the woods, near Holmwood, for 18 weeks using a 35m (115ft) drilling rig. The company previously said the exploration would be in a Forestry Commission plantation to avoid damaging ancient woodland and it would reduce the impact and damage caused by lorries.
