St Johns Church Redhill, Church Hall Development (14th Dec 12 at 11:08am UTC)
Why We object - please support us.

St John’s church is a beautiful building at the heart of Redhill’s St John’s conservation area, set in a picturesque and peaceful graveyard that is enhanced by many mature trees.

Sadly, the church itself wants to build a new church hall right inside the existing churchyard, disturbing graves and trees, increasing local traffic, noise and pressure on parking, and needlessly changing the heart of the area.

Sadder still, the local council has recently granted planning permission, despite nearly 30 objections from local residents, and despite the fact that this is a designated conservation area. But we fight on…

We understand that the church already has three local halls available to it for its activities. There is simply no justification for the new building in the churchyard.

The proposed usage is for “functions or activities associated with the use of the main (existing) church”. That could mean large numbers attending a huge variety of functions – and the impact on local noise and an already congested area, where parking is very difficult and where roads are narrow and dangerous, is unacceptable.

Only a dozen or so of the houses directly opposite the Church’s north side were canvassed for their opinion – none of the residents in Kings Avenue and others overlooking the planned development were formally told of the plans. The consultation process was a sham and the very real concerns of local residents were ignored.

The whole appearance of this part of Pendleton Road will change, as another parcel of green land is sacrificed for ‘convenience’. If they were your relatives in the churchyard, would you want them disturbed for a church hall? The impacts of this development far outweigh any potential benefit of a new hall.
