How shocked and surprised were we to find out a few weeks before Christmas that our place was accepted to run in this years Virgin London Marathon for a charity called Sense.
I have been running once a week for the last few years. Its a time to have a chat with my friend, Clare, and also a great way of keeping fit! We both live in Walton on Thames and enjoy running through beautiful areas in and around Walton.
Preparing to run for a marathon is a mean feat in itself, but having to raise funds can also be quite challenging. Just before Christmas, I had the idea of asking my father in law (ex pastry chef) to bake some mince pies for me to sell. I contacted some friends and 1000 mince pies later, we raised £400!!
We are also holding a fundraising event in March and have been overwhelmed by the generosity of local businesses. These prizes will be raffled on the night and include vouchers at The Dining Room, Nandos, Loch Fyne, Pizza Express and San Marcos. Cinema tickets from The Screen in Walton, Horse Racing Vouchers at Epsom and Sandown Park. We have wine from Laithwaites and Majestic Wine treatment vouchers from Tranquility in Claygate and Utopia to name but a few!
There is still a long way to go if you wish to contribute to my fundraising target, please make any donations you can to support our cause

Thank you for all your support! Gina
Questions and Answers
What inspired you to run the marathon? By running the same distance at the same speed, does not improve your stamina or endurance. By setting such a high goal, this has certainly challenged me to run faster and further. What better way than by running one of the most popular races and raising money. Is this your first time competing? I ran a 10k race last March at the Mercedes Benz race track in Brooklands. It gave me a real taster for running competitively.
What is your training regime? This is week 5 of a 16 week training schedule. I am training 3 to 4 times a week. This ranges from a 20 minute recover jog to a 40 minute treadmill session to a 50 minute race pace. We have incorporated hill running, which is recommended. The Seven Hills Road in Hersham is ideal but touch going! Each weekend, we concentrate on a long run. This weekend is an eleven mile run, increasing a 20 mile run. That is the furthest distance we are required to run. That will be the most we run before the 26.2miles on marathon day!
Why did you choose Sense as your charity? Each and every charity is special. Some are more popular than others. I felt this particular charity is relatively unknown and that by helping both children and adults that are deaf as well as blind is so rewarding. | |
