Red Deer Return to Surrey (9th Dec 10 at 3:29pm UTC) camberley
In a project involving Defence Estates, the land-arm of the Ministry of Defence, with the Surrey Wildlife Trust and deer experts for the first time in over 200 years Red deer have been returned to Surrey Heathland between Camberley, West End and Pirbright.
The area is currently owned by the MoD and used for training soldiers. It is also protected at a European level as a special protection area for its ground-nesting heathland birds, as a special area of conservation for its wetland areas.
Due to its military use, Defence Estates said it was hard to maintain the fast-growing shrubbery manually, but the deer could provide a natural solution.
