Measure for Measure is a story of passion and power, lust and restraint, sin and virtue and finally forgiveness and mercy. After 14 years of lax governance Vienna has become a place where moral and social corruption are rife. The Duke announces that he is to leave on pilgrimage and hands over power to the cold and puritanical Lord Angelo. Angelo immediately embarks on a ruthless mission to restore order and virtue to a city out of control. He condems Claudio to death and his sister Isabella pleads with Angelo for her brother's life. Overcome with lust for the pure Isabella, Angelo offers her a deal he will spare her brothers life in return for her virtue. Unbeknownst to them all the Duke, disguised as a Friar, has been paying close attention to the actions of his now corrupted deputy. Although perhaps one of the least performed of Shakespeares plays, Measure for Measure is one his most rich and complex, and explores issues of morality, justice and the abuse of power with bawdy humour , keen intelligence and a relevance to Directed by Jamie Glover. Cast includes Alistair McGowan & Jason Merrellslife in Britain today that is extraordinary.
